Natural gemstones, in addition to their beauty, also can be seen to symbolize eternity, as they began to form deep inside the Earth even before life crawled out of the oceans to walk upon the land. During the time it took for Nature to create these gems, dinosaurs could have come and gone. That's how long it takes for natural gemstone crystals to form. The most durable stones for wedding rings and engagement rings are the hardest gemstones, such as diamond, sapphire, ruby, chrysoberyl, spinel, etc. Next in durability would be aquamarine, emerald, topaz, garnet. Softer stones, such as tourmaline, tanzanite, amethyst, and opal, are better used in rings worn only occasionally. Lifestyle will also be a factor in durability of gemstones.

Here you see how I can set a single gemstone in one of my Celtic ring designs that is suitable for stone setting. These examples show the Complex-Weave design. Other of my Celtic designs which can be used for this type of gemstone ring are: the Tree-of-Life, Ribbon-Weave, Drumcliff Dogs, Dancing Triskels, Saxon-Celtic, and Repeating Brentfords patterns. All my Celtic ring styles suitable for one gemstone can be adapted to accept 3 small faceted gemstones of equal size. Birthstones are of varying hardnesses, and the softer stones will show some wear before the harder ones will, especially if the ring is worn every day. Harder stones are best for the long-term.
